Sodium Hydroxide NFPA 704 Diamond Sign: Health 3, Flammability 0, Instability 1
Post the correct NFPA 704 rating for sodium hydroxide, also called caustic soda or lye, on caustic storage rooms, water treatment chemical rooms, CIP cleaning systems and soap and food processing plants. Sodium hydroxide carries a 3-0-1 rating: Health 3 (serious injury on short exposure, severe burns), Flammability 0 (does not burn), Instability 1 (normally stable but can become unstable at elevated temperature, and it generates heat when mixed with water). Confirm the rating against your supplier's Safety Data Sheet, Section 16, since dilute solutions are often rated lower.
The sign uses the standard NFPA 704 diamond with blue, red and yellow quadrants and a white special hazard field. Fire crews and inspectors read it the same way on every site.
